City Documentary "Ostend"

One of the assignments for this first year of photography was a small photo documentary of a city. I choose Ostend for the job and after a lot of hard work I’m finally ready to ship them off to the printer. Here are some images from the series. The complete series can be found on flickr.

Shutter drag

This weeks lesson (photography class) was about dragging the shutter to create some neat effects with lights. So we took off to a nearby bridge over the highway to try this out. Incedentally we also ended up in a freshly plowed field during sunset.
Here are my results:

Night Time

17mm 30\

Another one from the nighttime series. It’s a strange thing to look at this photo and to realize that this is taken by night with no other light than the full moon and the street lights from the village to the far left. It’s a type of photography I’d like to explore more, so expect to see more of this in the future.

Frozen River

Last night me and my friend David decided that a full moon and clear skies were all the reasons we needed to head out and try our luck at some long-exposure shots. David knew this great little spot of nature not too far from Ghent but without the disturbing orange glare commonly known as “Street Lights”.

We set out with our tripods and camera’s to try and capture some of natures beauty in the dark. We did a whole bunch of 30″ exposure shots wich means you’re standing still most of the time, just waiting for the camera to finish. I’ve learned that standing still in a dark snowy grass field, when its -11° outside, is not the most comfortable position to be taking pictures, but in the end I think it was worth it, even if I did manage to only get one shot right :)

This shot has a 30″ exposure at ISO 400 and f7.1
